Located in the southwest of Rwanda, the district holds great potential to become one of the country’s most vibrant business hubs, attracting investors from all corners of the world. With its stunning landscapes, strategic location near the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Burundi, and supportive business environment, Rusizi offers a unique blend of natural beauty and economic opportunity. Here are five reasons why investors should add this destination to their investment bucket list.

Strategic Cross-Border Trade

One of Rusizi’s most significant advantages is its strategic location. Standing in this district, one can see the DRC to the west and Burundi to the south. This proximity offers immense opportunities for cross-border trade, allowing businesses in Rusizi to easily access and serve a wide and diverse consumer base. The nearby town of Bukavu in the DRC and the border with Burundi are just a short distance away, facilitating the movement between countries. This closeness not only lowers transportation costs but also fosters a dynamic economic environment conducive to trade and business growth.

The infrastructure connecting Rusizi to other parts of Rwanda, the DRC, and Burundi is continuously improving, making transportation quicker and more efficient. In 2022, Rwanda’s exports to the DRC were valued at $138 million. The ongoing enhancements in road networks and border facilities are expected to further boost trade activities, making Rusizi an even more attractive investment destination.

A Haven for Eco-Tourism

Rusizi’s natural beauty makes it an ideal location for eco-tourism investment. The district is home to lush rainforests such as Nyungwe National Park and Cyamudongo, breathtaking lakeshores, and a variety of landscapes that attract tourists seeking nature-based experiences. Investing in Rusizi’s eco-tourism and hospitality sector not only promotes environmental conservation but also benefits thousands of communities living in this district.

With its rich biodiversity and stunning scenery, Rusizi is an attractive destination for eco-tourism, offering investors a chance to tap into this growing market. The development of eco-friendly lodges, guided nature tours, and adventure activities such as hiking and bird watching are just a few examples of the potential investments in this sector.

The Richness of Agri-Tourism

Rusizi’s fertile land and favorable climate make it a location for agri-tourism. The district is home to numerous farms and plantations that offer unique agri-tourism experiences. These include tea and coffee plantations, vegetable farms, rice farms, and more. Visitors can engage in activities like picking tea leaves, touring coffee processing facilities, and learning about sustainable farming practices. These immersive experiences not only provide tourists with a deeper appreciation of the region’s agricultural heritage but also support the local economy.

“Rusizi is exceptional, our land is fertile and supports a wide variety of crops, including fruits, vegetables, grains, and more,” said Francois Mbonankira, a farmer in Rusizi District.

“Agriculture here thrives, thanks to good governance and strong security. I never have to worry about my crops, even in case there’s no supervision. Additionally, our land is highly productive when properly managed,” said Jean d’Arc Uwambaje, a farmer in Rusizi District.

Agri-tourism in Rusizi offers investors the chance to develop attractions such as farm stays, educational tours, and farm-to-table dining experiences. For instance, the Shagasha Tea Plantation allows tourists to engage with the farming process, helping them to understand the journey of one of Rwanda’s oldest teas. According to a June 2023 statistics report by NAEB, Rwanda’s agricultural export revenues amounted to more than $857 million (about Rwf1 trillion) in the fiscal year 2022-2023, highlighting the sector’s importance to the national economy.

Rusizi’s future looks promising, with significant development plans aimed at enhancing its infrastructure and economy. The district has embarked on ambitious initiatives to improve tourism facilities, continuously upgrade transport networks, and attract international investors.

Projects such as the rehabilitation of Rutabagire Port and the upgrade of Kamembe Airport to international standards are set to improve the district’s connectivity and attractiveness.

The district also plans to develop more upscale accommodations, and leisure and conference facilities, such as additional luxury resorts, to meet the needs of both business and leisure travelers.
